Thistles
Start from coach and horses. #1 and #5 cross over immediately and cury once on the wrong side. #2 and #4 curly once on the correct side. #3 slips down the left side of the set. All stop and step for 2 4s apart from #3 who casts down the right side of the set. All curly once on the same side as before as #3 casts down the left side of the set. The figure is then displayed in a star formation – to do this, #1 and #5 make sure they are pulling their swords upwards, and #2 and #4 make sure they are pulling theirs downwards. #3 ensures their hands are untwisted in order to twist the swords instead.
Flying Pixies
Start from coach and horses with #2 and #4 turned 360 inwards. Every 8 beats, each dancer moves round once place in the coach and horses formation anticlockwise, spinning as they go. The dancers in the #1 and #4 positions of the coach and horses should spin right to get to their next position, all others should spin left. Moving to the next position should take 4 beats, then step for 4 beats before moving again. The swords are all raised on beat 1, then lowered on beat 4. To end, tie a lock as normal – except #4 should turn right instead of left, and #2 should spin 360 left once in place.
Beefeater
Start from coach and horses. Immediately #1 and #5 raise #5′s sword and everyone takes a slight step apart to allow #3 through the middle. #3 casts round the set to the left, everyone else steps for 4, then #1 and #5 cast to stand next to #2 and #4, #2 and #4 step for another 4 whilst this is happenening. To display, #1 and #5 bend their swords into arches, #3 lifts both hand in the air to form two parallel vertical lines. #5′s sword should be straight along the bottom, with the hilts of all other swords touching it. The display is stepped for 2 3s, then #1 and #2, and #4 and #5 do little circles round each other to tie the lock, as this is happenening #3 walks forward and turns left on the spot.
